About Us

barkisu is a love-letter to my culture and upbringing. Growing up in Serrekunda, The Gambia, I was always inspired and in awe of the beautiful, vibrant fabrics that adorned my family and friends especially during the traditional festivals and ceremonies. Moving to the United States at the age 17, I saw the vast contrast of traditional African wear and everyday American fashion and saw the opportunity to marry the two in my designs. Travel has always been a part of my life, and because of that, the focus of my brand. Connecting cultures through travel inspired me to create quality, handmade bags that reflect my experiences as an African and as an American. Owning a barkisu piece is an invitation to celebrate culture, and of course, embrace boldness.
